Shillong, Sep 23: The Meghalaya High Court has initiated suo moto contempt proceedings against Adarsh Jhunjhunwala, Managing Director, JUD Cements Ltd, for willful breach of undertaking given to the court to clear power dues.
Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew was hearing a case filed by JUD Cements against MePDCL.
He noted that on July 15, the company’s MD Jhunjhunwala had promised in court, through his senior lawyer, that he would pay the dues. Based on that promise, the court had ordered him to pay Rs 50 lakh by July 18 to get power reconnected, and pay the remaining over Rs 6.70 crore in installments on August 10, September 10, October 10 and November 10.
The MePDCL told the court that even after the Managing Director’s assurance, JUD Cements did not make the payments and did not even clear its regular monthly power bills.
“As the undertaking is seen to have been violated, let a notice issue to the Contemnor as prescribed by Rule 6(3) of the Contempt of Courts (High Court of Meghalaya) Rules, within one week,” the court said.
The matter will be heard on October 28.
