Police are investigating a recent case of vigilante justice meted out in Nongstoiñ to a person suspected of being a thief. The would-be thief was apprehended by members of the public but was then assaulted, with video footage of this being circulated online.
On August 2, information was received by Nongstoiñ police that local people had detained a person who was attempting to steal a stereo system from a vehicle parked in the DTO’s office. Police apprehended the person and registered a criminal case against him.
However, before the police reached the spot, the suspect was assaulted by some of those who caught him.
“The act of taking the law into their own hands by the public has led to a criminal case being registered against those individuals involved in wrongfully confining and assaulting the accused person,” Assistant Inspector General of Police, GK Iangrai, informed through a press release today.
