A heated argument broke out between pressure groups of Meghalaya and Assam police in Sabuda village under the disputed Block II along Meghalaya-Assam border today.
Members of the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Eastern Ri Bhoi and Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) wanted to visit Sabuda village to display their claim over the disputed area after the Karbi Students Union (KSA) recently claimed that Block II falls under the jurisdiction of Karbi Anglong in Assam.
When Assam police prevented the two organisations from entering the village, fearing break down of law and order in the disputed area, the groups protested which led to exchange of words.
It was after Ri Bhoi police intervened that some leaders and members of the two groups were later allowed to enter Sabuda, Jatalong and other villages under the disputed area.
KSU area president, Banjob Maring and RBYF finance secretary, Phrangsngi Kylla told reporters that the claims made by the KSA was false and warned them not to interfere in the Block II area as it belonged to Meghalaya.
Stating that their intention was to promote peace in Block II the leaders of both the groups claimed that the Assam government and the KSA are harassing the Khasi community in Block II. “We will not hesitate to take drastic action in protecting our own land and for peace and harmony of the people here,” they said.
