Far from being able to wipe the Congress Party from Meghalaya in the next state elections, it is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that is likely to suffer because of the state of the economy and other factors, the state Mahila Congress said today.
BJP national secretary Arun Singh, on his visit to the state over the weekend, had predicted that the Congress would be demolished in Meghalaya, a state that it has long held power in.
Instead of making such claims, Singh should “perhaps do his homework”. After all, despite throwing everything it could into the polls, it still finished second-best to the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal’s recent elections, state Mahila Congress president Joplyn Scott Shylla said in a press release.
“Rising fuel prices, high inflation in all sectors and surmounting unemployment” coupled with GDP growth that is worse than what it was in the Congress era before 2014 will also hit the BJP hard, she added.
Shylla also criticised the recent comment by new BJP cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai that if the BJP wins the 2023 state election, then it will bring in the Inner Line Permit quickly as an example of the saffron party not learning from its past mistakes of promising more than it can deliver to the people.
“The BJP state and central leadership should stop its habit of making false promises and be more mature in its dialogue with the people, instead of promising the moon without arranging a rocket to take them to see it,” she retorted.
