A significant cache of explosives was recovered from Umdu, Ri-Bhoi, following a joint operation by West Garo Hills and Ri-Bhoi police today morning.
One person was also arrested in connection with this case.
On July 23, police in West Garo Hills received intelligence of a plan to kidnap a person for ransom in Tura by a new armed group. Two people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in this case and, during interrogation, they revealed that explosives had been hidden in Umdu.
Police then arrested one person today who was in possession of the explosives.
The items seized comprised 23 gelatine sticks of 2.875kg, 24 non-electric detonators and 9 metres of safety fuse, which could have been used in an improvised explosive device (IED).
Police believe that, with the arrest of the three, the authorities have managed to foil the attempt to launch a new militant group in Meghalaya.
