Police in Umsning, Ri-Bhoi, undertook an awareness programme today to spread the message about Covid-19.
The meeting was held at the Umsning Police Outpost where officers enlightened representatives of traditional local government on the importance of taking the Covid vaccine.
Ri-Bhoi’s coronavirus caseload is approaching 7,000, with 5,500 of these infections being recorded since April 1. There are currently 712 active cases in the district.
The attendees were told categorically that reluctance among the general population in taking the jab is helping the disease spread.
“The only way to fight against the widespread spread of Covid-19 is the collective responsibility of the people to come together and to get themselves vaccinated,” Deputy Superintendent of Police BP Joshi said.
The spread of Covid has forced the police to take part in awareness drives, even though their main duty is the preservation of law and order, he added.
Those who attended the meeting included the chairman of Umsning Town Dorbar, Anthony Makdoh, headman of Umsning Proper A, Ritstar Khonghat, headman of Umsning Proper B, Rocky Marwein and other representatives.
