Nongpoh, Jul 20: Torrential overnight rain in Ri-Bhoi District triggered landslides and flash floods on Monday, killing one child, injuring three others, and causing widespread damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure.
The worst incident occurred in Umlamphlang village under Mawhati Constituency, where a landslide struck a house in the early hours. One child died after being trapped under debris, while three family members were rescued with injuries and given medical aid.
Several villages in Umling and Umladoh were hit by flash floods. Scores of families fled their homes around midnight as water entered houses, damaging belongings and leaving mud and debris behind.
The Umling-Patharkhmah road was severely affected, with stretches washed away and landslides cutting off vehicular movement.
The Umling Health and Wellness Centre also suffered major damage after floodwaters entered wards, including the maternity ward, damaging medicines, equipment, documents and furniture. Nurse In-Charge R. Ronghang said it was the first time the facility had witnessed flooding of such magnitude.
Residents have urged authorities for immediate relief, restoration of roads, and assistance to affected families as the district continues to reel from the extreme weather.
