The desire for Sohra civil sub-division to be upgraded into a district is a genuine one of the local people, Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem told Highland Post today.
“We have made our yearning heard by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma that Sohra fully deserves district status and we expect a positive response from the state government on this genuine demand of ours,” Mylliem said. “We are trying to convince the state government to also give Sohra district status because the demand goes hand in hand with the demand for upgrading Mairang civil sub-division into a district.”
The government had announced recently that Mairang will become a district by August 15. At the same time, Sangma had said that geography is proving a hurdle when it comes to mapping the deep valleys that divide Sohra from Pynursla. Nevertheless, Mylliem said that the CM is very positive about the creation of a South East Khasi Hills district.
Mairang’s civil sub-division was carved out in 1976, while that of Sohra was formed six years later.
Mylliem also said that the public should not lose heart and he is hopeful that it will happen at the right time.
