Amid the fight against the sharp rise of Covid-19 in the state, the Young Minds group from Ri-Bhoi celebrated World Environment Day yesterday by planting more than 100 saplings and also released fingerlings into the Umlew River.
Young Minds is a group of local youth from the district looking to make a positive change.
Umlew River has historically been rich in fish and Young Minds’ goal is to keep it that way.
Led by its president, Isynei Hinge, and adviser, CL Masharing, and accompanied by its members, the group planted more than a hundred saplings in the area around the Umlew and also released the juvenile fish.
Village leaders from Nongtraw and leaders and members of the Umlew River Protection Committee were also present during the event.
Speaking to the media, Masharing said that Young Minds wants to convert the river into a fish sanctuary. He also thanked the Dorbar and protection committee for their work in preserving the river from pollution, poisoning of fish, etc.
