In a tragic incident, five people died and one other is in critical condition after consuming wild mushrooms at a village situated on the border of Ri-Bhoi and Mairang civil sub-division.
Smilinda Mawnai (the mother) died along with her children Konbenshon Mawnai, Barisha Mawnai, Storshon Mawnai and Stebenshon Mawnai after eating the mushrooms. Smilinda’s husband remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital.
The family partook of the mushrooms on May 25 at their home in Lumdam village.
Korbenshon was the first to pass away on May 27, followed by Barisha the following day and Storshon the day after. There was no respite in tragedy for the family as Smilinda and Stebenshon also died in the following two days.
The couple’s eldest daughter has recovered while the youngest child in the family, a boy, did not eat the mushrooms, local headman Andreas Nongrang said.
