The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has sought the Education Minister’s intervention in the approval for appointment and posting of assistant teachers in government primary schools in West Khasi Hills.
Stating that as per the norms and standards of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 the HITO said from class 1 to class V, if the enrolment is up to 60 students the number of teachers should be two and between 60 to 90 teachers should be three while between 91 to 120 four teachers are needed, the groups stated that the latest approval for appointment and posting of Assistant teacher in government lower primary schools notified on April 9 was not base as per the norms.
HITO said that the process has mismatched the pupil-teacher ratio and it was found tantamount to violation of the educational rights of the students. While some schools have a dearth of teachers, others are overstaffed, it claimed.
“We urge the government to initiate action on the matter at the earliest for the interest of the students at large,” HITO said.
