The UDP will field candidates for 18 seats in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections that will be held next month.
“We will field 18 candidates and this time we are very hopeful that the UDP will open our account,” party General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh told Highland Post today.
He maintained that there is public support for the UDP from the people of Garo Hills.
The delayed elections to the GHADC, which is currently under Administrator’s Rule after the term of the previous council ended in October, will be held on April 12. In the 30-member house, 29 MDCs are elected and one is nominated by the state government.
Meanwhile, with regards to the Mawryngkneng Assembly by-election, Mawthoh said that the UDP has already conducted a study into conditions on the ground and will take a decision “at the right time”.
The by-election was necessitated following the sudden death of Congress MLA David Nongrum in February
