Meghalaya Police, in collaboration with Cyber Peace Foundation (CPF), an award-winning grass root NGO and think tank of cyber security and policy experts, wrapped up the month long Cyber Peace Awareness Campaign today through a virtual programme.
The campaign which was designed to promote cyber safety awareness through webinars also included a survey which focused primarily on identifying online threats that people are exposed to and their understanding of internet usage and technology.
Through the survey, it was found that about 68 per cent of the respondents were aware that they could file a case under the Information Technology Act, 2000 but only 12 per cent of the respondents stated that they have ever reported to the police when exposed to cybercrime while 40 per cent of the participants chose to do nothing about it.
Out of the total participants in the survey, 23 per cent of the respondents were not aware of the provisions of laws which could assist them in seeking redressal against a cybercrime.
The webinar was attended by students from various schools and colleges. A video message of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma was also aired. In his message, he emphasised on the need to educate the youth on how to battle online threats.
He also dwelt on the need to ensure digital wellbeing and on the importance of understanding the different types of cybercrimes.
Senior police officials who addressed the participants of the webinar were Director General of Police, R. Chandranathan, Additional Director General of Police, I. Nongrang and V. Singh, Special Superintendent of Police (CID).
Capt. Vineet Kumar, Founder and President, Cyber Peace Foundation, declared the winners of the Brain Olympics and Jingle Competition.
