In a major achievement for the state police, authorities in North Garo Hills busted a major motorcycle theft gang and recovered more than a dozen stolen bikes.
The week-long operation also led to the arrest of four suspects.
“The operation was ongoing for a week and we were able to recover 13 stolen bikes that were sold to unsuspecting residents of Meghalaya. The motorcycles were stolen from various parts of Assam before being sold in Meghalaya. We have managed to arrest four suspected agents of the gang,” said Superintendent of Police Abraham Sangma.
There have been many more arrests in the case in Assam, where the case has now been transferred.
The modus operandi of the group was to steal the bikes, change the engine and chassis numbers and then bring them to Mendipathar where agents would contact customers looking to buy second-hand bikes. Documents to prove ownership were then forged before the bikes were sold to the unsuspecting customers.
The district police have also issued an advisory on the matter and appealed to all residents to properly verify whenever they buy any second-hand or used vehicles from any individual or online platform.
