Bad roads in Meghalaya are a painful reality from poorly constructed roads to unattended ones even to non-repair, where residents themselves have chosen to repair them.
One such road is in East Jaiñtia Hills connecting Pala, Kseh, Muknor and Khahnar villages constructed way back in 1980. The condition of the road is such that traveller will have to face continuous jolts.
This was flagged by the Wahehshnongs of these areas who even felt they cannot rake this issue up over and over again before the Meghalaya government, but instead would choose to join Assam.
Chairman of Sumer Elaka, Metheus Dkhar said, “We would once again urge our government to address this issue otherwise the four villages would willingly choose to be with Assam.”
He said that the road was never repaired for once since 1980 and villagers have shell out money just to buy materials like stones to mend what they can to ease travelling.
Dkhar warned that villagers would boycott elections and would shut down the polling stations located in those areas over bad roads.
Members of the East Jaiñtia National Council led by president Sambormi Lyngdoh also visited the areas and condemned the State government for its failure in catering to the needs of the people there. They assured the villagers that the organisation would knock the government’s door and would meet the PWD minister and would organise agitations if their demand is not met.
