Shillong, Nov 7: Midday meal cooks in Eastern West Khasi Hills have demanded a ten-fold hike in their monthly honorarium, from Rs 900 to Rs 9,000, saying the present amount is not enough to survive.
The demand was raised at a meeting of the Union of Cook-Cum-Helpers PM POSHAN, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, held at Tirot Sing Memorial Hall, Pyndengumiong, Mairang.
Union Adviser Khroo L Pariat said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has written to the union and to the Ministry of Education, extending support for the demand to increase the honorarium of school cooks in the northeastern region.
He expressed hope that with support from the region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India will address their grievances.
The cooks urged the centre to treat their work as essential service and revise the honorarium in line with rising prices and workload.
