Shillong, Nov 6: Meghalaya received the largest share of funds released by the North Eastern Council (NEC) during October 2026, getting Rs 26.56 crore out of a total Rs 79.53 crore released across the Northeast.
The funds were released under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) and the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme – Roads (NESIDS-Roads).
The bulk of Meghalaya’s allocation has been earmarked for the rehabilitation and strengthening of the 46.08-km Chokpot-Kharukol road. The project, taken up under NESIDS-Roads, is expected to benefit 78 villages and more than 15,000 residents in the Garo Hills region, improving connectivity to remote habitations.
Support was also provided for the establishment of a Multi-Disciplinary Training-cum-Resource Centre in Shillong, aimed at strengthening skill development and resource support in the state capital.
In a boost to science and education, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) completed the design and development of low-cost laboratory instruments during the month. The project is expected to make practical science learning more affordable for institutions in the region.
According to an official statement, the October releases reflect NEC’s focus on improving connectivity, strengthening rural infrastructure, promoting agro-based activities and expanding scientific and educational facilities across the Northeast.
