Jowai, Sep 15: Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai celebrated its 60th Foundation Day on Tuesday at the college auditorium.
Education Commissioner & Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri attended the celebration as the chief guest in the presence of District School Education Officer Dr Waisa Sumer, government officials, teachers and students.
The college was established on September 15, 1967 as Jowai Night College during the Assam government. It became Jowai Government College in 1971, shifted to its present campus at Iongpiah in 1981, and was renamed Kiang Nangbah Government College in 1983.
Principal H. Toi said the college now has 3,309 students, 129 teaching faculty and 80 non-teaching staff. He said the college offers Arts, Science and Commerce streams, was accredited with NAAC Grade-B in 2021, the first college in the state to get the recognition, and implemented NEP-2020 from 2023. It also offers 15 vocational training courses and the Four-Year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) with support from RUSA.
Mantri lauded the college’s contribution to education in Jaintia Hills and assured support for its requirements. He stressed the need for a new auditorium and said the government would release the second instalment of the Umbrella Scholarship before Christmas.
Teachers and student toppers were felicitated on the occasion. Cultural songs and dances were presented by students.
