Jowai, Sep 7: A famed pond in the heart of Jowai town has become a garbage dump.
Nan Kashari, steps away from the Deputy Commissioner office and one of Jaintia Hills’ best-known water bodies, now lies abandoned – its water turned dark green, its surface choked with plastic and filth.
And yet, fish survive. Gasping, surfacing, nibbling at plastic bits for food.
Right behind it is a park opened with fanfare on Environment Day 2010 by then Deputy Commissioner T. Dkhar and maintained by Forest Department and Dkhar clan’s Tpep Thang Sati – a bitter contrast to the rot next door.
In the middle of Jowai, Nan Kashari could have been a pride, a tourist attraction. Today it is an eyesore where anyone dumps anything, with no owner to care.
If Jowai is to stay beautiful, its water cannot stay filthy.
