Shillong, Sep 9: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has condemned the alleged killing of 55-year-old Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh outside his residence in Kilokari, Southeast Delhi, and demanded a swift and impartial investigation.
In a statement, NESO Chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa said the organisation was deeply disturbed that Singh succumbed to injuries allegedly inflicted by a group of men after he objected to disturbance outside his house.
“We demand that the authorities conduct a swift, impartial and thorough investigation and ensure that all the perpetrators are prosecuted and given exemplary punishment,” NESO said.
The organisation said the incident cannot be overlooked against the backdrop of harassment, racial discrimination and violence faced by people from the Northeast in mainland India.
“For years, Northeastern citizens living, studying and working outside the region have repeatedly reported being subjected to racial slurs, verbal abuse, physical attacks and social discrimination,” it said.
NESO said such incidents cannot be dismissed as isolated disputes and raise serious questions about security, dignity and equal treatment of Northeastern citizens.
It urged the government and law enforcement agencies to address racial discrimination, enforce sensitisation of police and strengthen safety mechanisms, adding that it stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the people of Manipur.
