Shillong, Aug 20: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday agreed to work jointly to restore peace and normalcy following violence in Shillong on August 19 and retaliatory actions along the border.
In posts on X, both leaders said designated Cabinet Ministers from the two states will meet to discuss measures to rebuild trust and ensure safety of commuters.
Sangma said, “We have agreed to work together, as always, to normalise the situation.” He appealed to citizens of both states to “maintain peace, harmony and restraint,” adding that Meghalaya and Assam “share deep bonds.”
Sarma described the states as “sister States” bound by “deep historical, cultural and people-to-people ties” and said “mutual respect, restraint and sensitivity must guide us at all times.”
The CMs’ intervention comes amid concerns over the impact on people travelling between the states for work, education, healthcare and business.
The Meghalaya government said it remains committed to addressing concerns through dialogue and constitutional mechanisms while ensuring the safety and dignity of citizens.
