Khliehriat, Aug 18: Several trucks carrying materials for Shree Cement were stranded for hours on Tuesday, after getting stuck on a damaged stretch of the PWD road in the Tongseng-Nongkhlieh area, sources said.
According to reports, trucks were trying to reach the company’s site in Nongkhlieh Elaka when they were halted at the point where the road had been dug up.
The PWD road was allegedly dug up by unidentified persons ahead of the public hearing held on July 31, 2026. Sources added that the damage to the road has caused difficulties not only for Shree Cement’s material trucks, but also for local residents who travel on the Tongseng–Nongkhlieh route. Those affected include residents of Nongkhlieh Elaka and people from the Saipung area who need to access government offices.
It was also reported that one truck carrying Shree Cement materials has been stuck at the site since around 10 am on Tuesday, and was still stranded as of late evening when this report was filed.
The Tongseng-Nongkhlieh road has been a point of contention amid protests over the proposed 217.394-hectare mining project by Shree Cement. The Jaintia Students’ Union earlier alleged that the road was deliberately damaged to block protesters from attending the public hearing, and has since filed a petition before the NGT Eastern Zone Bench in Kolkata citing the incident as part of its evidence.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the latest incident or on repair work for the affected stretch.
