Shillong, Aug 18: The Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), in collaboration with San-Ker, Centre for Mental Health and Neurology, Shillong, commenced a three-day induction training programme for newly recruited staff of the government-supported Sewa Inland Rehabilitation Centre, Tura.
The training from July 18–20, brings together medical staff, counsellors and other personnel for the newly opened centre in West Garo Hills.
This is the first such induction programme initiated by DREAM. It combines theoretical orientation with hands-on learning to equip staff with knowledge and skills for effective and humane management of rehabilitation services.
DREAM said the structured training model will be adopted for all newly established government-supported rehabilitation centres in the state, to ensure trained personnel are in place before centres become operational.
As part of the practical component, trainees will receive exposure at New Life De-addiction Centre (Male), New Hope De-addiction Centre (Female) and Kripa Rehabilitation Centre for Children (Boys) to familiarise them with patient management, counselling, behavioural challenges and team coordination.
Founder of San-Ker Dr S Syiem and project coordinators from various centres attended the inaugural session.
DREAM Mission Director Francis G. Kharshiing said the programme marks an important milestone toward operationalising the first government-supported rehabilitation centre in Garo Hills, in line with the Chief Minister’s vision of establishing such centres in every district.
Project coordinators stressed that alongside professional competence, qualities like patience, empathy and compassion are essential for rehabilitation staff.
DREAM said capacity-building of personnel is integral to strengthening the state’s continuum of care and ensuring government-supported centres deliver quality treatment and support recovery and reintegration.
