Shillong, Jul 17: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) marked its 98th foundation day with vibrant celebrations hosted by the ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ICAR-ATARI), Zone-VII, Umiam.
The event brought together scientists, farmers, extension personnel, and stakeholders, including the enthusiastic virtual participation of all 42 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in the northeastern states of Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.
The festivities commenced with a plantation drive at the ICAR-ATARI office.
Vice Chancellor of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, Dr. Anupam Mishra emphasised the crucial need for food and nutritional security, urging attendees to focus on improving soil health as vital for sustainable agriculture.
Director of ICAR-ATARI, Dr. A.K. Mohanty celebrated the achievements of the institute and shared insights into its future plans for agricultural development.
The role of KVKs was highlighted in the successful execution of various initiatives, such as the VIKSIT Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan and Kharif Contingency Preparedness.
Ulhas Kulkarni, a well-known farmer activist of the region and Member, All India Executive Committee, Guwahati urged scientists, extension agencies and farmers to effectively utilize ICAR-developed technologies and innovations for addressing farmers’ problems while ensuring profitable and sustainable agriculture.
Additionally, the event featured the release of the ‘Kharif Contingency Plan 2026’ and a memorandum of understanding with the Meghalaya Farmers’ Empowerment Commission to enhance collaborative agricultural efforts.
