Shillong, Jul 8: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) youth wing has appealed to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to expand the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP) to West Khasi Hills, where financial resources and platforms for showcasing talent are scarce.
In a letter to Sangma, the youth wing highlighted the efforts made by individual artists and the Ge Thymmei U Mulliang Society and said these groups have organised musical evenings to promote local musicians, but have struggled to maintain consistent events due to financial constraints.
For 2026, only one successful event took place in Nongpyndeng due to lack of funding, the youth wing said.
The letter expressed admiration for the government’s initiatives with MGMP in Shillong.
Citing the budget session point 3.5.1, which acknowledges the youth’s inclination toward music and sports the youth wing requested that the same opportunity be given to musicians of West Khasi Hills.
The letter also highlighted that local artists including Eric Nathan Rymbai, Rafael Kharbani, Magkara Dkhar, Ibadonbok Shisha Marwein and Nestlyroy Syiemlieh, who took to social media, tagging the Chief Minister, as a humble plea for assistance in providing a platform for their talent.
