Shillong, Jul 1: The Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) has written to the Chief Minister to plead for the one time settlement scheme for commercial vehicles to be extended to private vehicle owners who are in default of penalties to the state government.
A large number of private vehicle owners have also been facing severe financial hardship since the Covid-19 pandemic, the JYF said. Many have been unable to clear accumulated motor vehicle taxes and other statutory dues, causing them to remain defaulters despite their willingness to regularise their vehicles.
Extending the settlement scheme to private vehicles “would provide much needed relief, encourage voluntary compliance with the law, increase vehicle registrations and ultimately enhance the state’s long term revenue collection,” it said.
