Shillong, Jun 30: The Committee on Petitions of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly held an awareness programme at the Batabari Community and Rural Development Block in the Rajabala constituency, West Garo Hills district.
The programme aimed to enhance public understanding of the committee’s role, serving as a platform for citizens to voice their grievances effectively.
Chaired by Pongseng R. Marak, MLA and chairman of the committee, the programme saw attendance from committee members, officials of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, and local representatives, including NGOs and students.
During his address, Marak emphasised the importance of educating citizens about the functioning of the committee, which plays a significant role in addressing the concerns of the public. Residents were encouraged to bring forward their issues for consideration.
Many challenges concerning the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MECL), the alleged overbilling and erratic electricity supply by SAI Computers and the poor condition of National Highway-127B connecting Phulbari, Rajabala and Selsella.
Committee member Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi said the committee on petitions acts as a bridge between citizens and the government, facilitating the examination of public grievances and ensuring avenues for redress when concerns remain unresolved.
