Shillong, May 22: A meeting was chaired by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner on May 15 to discuss the encroachment made within the Right of Way (RoW) along the newly constructed Shillong to Dawki Road wherein it was decided that the authorities will evict the hawkers along this stretch.
A representative from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corp Ltd (NHIDCL) raised concerns about the hawkers encroaching into the RoW at multiple locations along the stretch of Rilbong Point, 3½ Mile Upper Shillong and 7th Mile Upper Shillong and also about the setting up of a parking lot at Rilbong Point.
As the encroachment may pose “high risk to the general public”, the hawkers, and vehicular movement, the meeting decided that officials from the Shillong Traffic Police; Public Works Department (Roads), National Highway Division Shillong and NHIDCL should collaborate to evict the hawkers.
The meeting also decided that NHIDCL would put markings along the acquired RoW, the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) would place barricades restricting parking of vehicles within the RoW and to depute police personnel at the site and the NHIDCL, PWD (Roads) NH Division and police will carry out the eviction process after prior awareness is given to all concerned.
