Shillong, May 22: The Meghalaya High Court today disposed of a petition concerning the sacred rituals of the Niam Khasi faith.
A single bench of Justice Hamarsan Thangkhiew reviewed a resolution from the Dorbar Raid Mylliem-Hima Mylliem (San Kur Khadwei Kur Ha Ryngkat U Lyngdoh) taken on May 21, 2026 which detailed names of individuals proposed to conduct the rituals.
The court appreciated the prompt action taken by the Dorbar Kur and acknowledged the suggestion of 16 names who maintain their affiliation with the Niam Khasi.
The court also said that while it will not issue further orders, it trusts the wisdom of the Dorbar Kur and the Lyngdoh to finalise the list of eligible individuals based on the names provided.
The petition arose from concerns that the “Ka Leh Niam Raid Mylliem,” ritual is exclusive to the Niam Khasi (indigenous) faith. There was a contention that a Myntri representing the ‘5 Kur, 11 Kur’ under Hima Mylliem is a practicing Christian and therefore ineligible to lead or participate in the sacred rite, as it would violate customary religious practices.
