Shillong, May 22: Students had to sit their exams by candlelight at Tura Government College (TGC) due to a power outage.
A video of this went viral, prompting the college authorities to issue a clarification today.
In the release, TGC said that the incident occurred yesterday after a severe storm knocked out the electricity supply in the area. Emergency repair and restoration of the power took time and was “beyond the institution’s control.”
In the absence of a long-duration power backup facility, the college administration made immediate temporary arrangements using the limited resources available, including candles, to ensure that students could continue writing their examinations with minimal inconvenience.
The institution stated that it prioritised the interest of the students and made every possible effort to ensure that the examination process continued smoothly despite the unforeseen circumstances caused by the natural calamity and prolonged power disruption.
The college administration also expressed appreciation for the patience, cooperation and understanding shown by the students, invigilators and guardians during the difficult situation.
