Shillong, May 20: A viral video earlier this month that showed a section of roofing material in disarray on the new Assembly building had been “blown out of proportion”, the Assembly Speaker, Thomas A Sangma, said today.
Sangma chaired a periodic review meeting of the construction work on the new Assembly in Mawdiangdiang.
During the meeting, the progress of construction and related works were reviewed in detail. Following the assessment, the Speaker stated that the progress of work was found to be satisfactory and expressed confidence that the construction of the new Assembly building would be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
While appreciating and welcoming constructive criticism, Sangma urged members of the public to refrain from sharing or posting unverified content that may create misconceptions and bring disrepute to the institution of the Assembly.
The new Assembly has had its fair share of mishaps, including the spectacular collapse of its central dome while under construction in May 2022. This time accusations were again made that substandard materials were being used but a project management consultant instead blamed the roofing trouble on improper cleaning of the tin sheets.
