Shillong, May 18: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today announced the postponement of the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET), originally set for May 29.
The decision comes as a result of appeals from a delegation of teachers who are currently facing conflicts due to their mandatory national duties, a statement from the CMO said.
In a public program held in Damas, North Garo Hills, Sangma listened to the concerns of the educators concerning their struggles in balancing exam preparations with their ongoing responsibilities and assignments for the upcoming census and SIR duties.
“The teachers are worried and in a dilemma, given their multiple concurrent assignments,” he stated. Taking their concerns, he confirmed the MTET examination will be postponed to ensure that teachers have adequate time to prepare. He assured to monitor the situation closely and reschedule the exam at a more suitable time.
At the event the chief minister also addressed the broader issues in Meghalaya’s education sector. He praised the dedication of educators in the face of systemic challenges, particularly highlighting gaps in professional training.
He noted that while infrastructure and the number of schools have improved significantly, educational standards are still lagging behind. “In terms of quantity, we have enough schools, but we are lagging behind in quality,” he stated.
Sangma emphasised that enhancing educational standards requires collaboration among all stakeholders, including parents, to uplift the state’s students.
