Shillong, May 15: A two-day national symposium on the “Application of Plasma Physics in Sustainable Waste Management and Conservation” was held at Sankardev College, Shillong.
The event brought together experts from various fields, including scientists, medical professionals, and policymakers, to explore advanced solutions for managing solid waste, particularly biomedical waste, in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2026.
Organized by the departments of physics, environmental science, botany, and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Sankardev College, the symposium was conducted in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB).
MSPCB Chairman R. Nainamalai, Member Secretary Dr. G.H. Chyrmang attended the event as guest.
Environmental engineers, technical officers, and representatives from medical institutions and research centers took part in the symposium. The resource person include Dr. Nirav Ishwalal Jamnapara, Scientific Officer-G, Head, Project and Technology Transfer Section & Head, Atal Incubation Centre- IPR Plasmatech Innovation Foundation, Institute for Plasma Research, Gandhinagar, Gujarat; Dr. Bharat Kakati, Dean, School of Engineering, Centre Head, Entrepreneurship Development Centre, Assam Science and Technology University, Guwahati; and Dr. Ngangom Aomoa, Scientific Officer-D, Centre of Plasma Physics-IPR, Guwahati.
The aim of the symposium was to create a platform for discourse between scientists from the Institute for Plasma Research and key stakeholders to address solid waste management with an objective to provide advanced solutions using the application of Plasma Physics in sustainable and scientific waste management, including bio-medical waste, in view of Solid Waste Management Rules 2026.
