Shillong, May 10: The body of an unidentified man that had been floating in an abandoned mine was recovered by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) today.
The body had been noticed yesterday but, because of the mine’s depth, it was not possible for the police to pull it out themselves.
Instead, the SDRF was intimated and a team travelled to the mine at Mulaibrisumer village in East Jaintia Hills.
The SDRF team, led by Sub-Inspector D Kharbhih, reached the incident site at approximately 10:30am. Immediately upon arrival, the team commenced the recovery operation.
Three SDRF personnel – F Shangrit, A Dhar and M Chyrmang – with assistance from the quick response team of Khliehriat Civil Defence, descended into the abandoned mine with the support of a crane system to retrieve the body, which was floating head-down in the water.
At approximately 11:15am the team recovered the body of the man, who is estimated to be between 30-40 years old.
The body was handed over to the police authorities for further necessary legal formalities and investigation.
The SDRF commends the coordinated efforts of all personnel involved in the operation and reiterates its commitment to prompt emergency response and public safety.
