Shillong, Apr 3: State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), Meghalaya conducted an awareness programme on organ donation and transplant at NEIGRIHMS in the form of marathon cum walkathon recently.
More than 400 participants, which included the youngest runner as 4 years old and the eldest runner as 62 years of age, actively participated in the marathon.
NEIGRIHMS Director Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta who flagged off the marathon, in his speech emphasised the need for society to come forward for organ donation pledges to help the country tide over the crises of organ shortage.
The Joint Director of Health Services explained the hardships faced by the patients and their attendants from Meghalaya who have to travel to far off places across India for organ transplantation facilities.
The Medical Superintendent and Dean stressed upon the need for starting organ transplant services and facilities at NEIGRIHMS.
Two kidney donors shared their experiences as donors to encourage the gathering.
Winners in various categories of marathon were felicitated with prizes.
