Shillong, Mar 3: To commemorate World Hearing Day 2026, the Cell for Persons with Disabilities, Lady Keane College Shillong in collaboration with the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD) organised an awareness programme on hearing loss.
Dr. Howni Wothi Laloo, Senior Resident, Department of ENT, Shillong and Nodal Officer NPPCD presented an awareness lecture to the faculty and students.
He spoke on the importance of ear health and measures to prevent hearing loss and said that hearing disorder being a progressive disease if undiagnosed and treated on time can seriously impact the quality of life of sufferers.
Dr. Laloo said that students are a vulnerable group to loud decibels of sound especially those listening to music on headphones, attending concerts, loud parties and jam sessions, and blasting music in confined spaces while for some it could be a congenital problem where one is born with certain defects.
The awareness lecture was followed by a screening camp for all students and staff of the college.
The theme for World Hearing Day 2026 is ‘From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.’
