Shillong, Dec 20: An indigenous farmers’ market cum Krishi Mela was successfully organized by the Hill Farmers Union, Raid Iapngar Circle in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ri Bhoi yesterday at NICRA village Liarkhla.
The aim is to link farmers directly with buyers and provide a platform to showcase indigenous agricultural products and traditional practices. It also sought to encourage farmers through knowledge exchange, market exposure, and recognition of excellence in the agriculture and allied sectors.
The programme provided a platform for farmers to interact with experts, buyers, and stakeholders, strengthening collaboration and promoting sustainable rural livelihoods
Umroi MDC Isynei Hinge and Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Ri Bhoi Dr. Mokidul Islam attended the programme as guest.
Hinge emphasised the importance of patience and teamwork, even within the farming community, for achieving long-term success and collective growth.
Islam highlighted the importance of sustainable integrated fish farming as a viable and environmentally sound livelihood option.
Competitions were organised on the themes of agriculture and allied sectors, including animal husbandry and fisheries, to encourage innovation and participation among farmers. Certificates and prizes were awarded to farmers from different villages in recognition of their efforts and achievements.
The event was also attended by Dr. Marina Dkhar, Director, MSFAC Meghalaya, officials from the Veterinary, Sericulture and Forest Departments, local headmen, and farmers from 20 villages under Raid Iapngar.
