Shillong, Nov 2: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Saturday commemorated the 66th death anniversary of Rev JJM Nichols Roy, who is known as the architect of the Sixth Schedule.
A floral tribute was paid to him in front of his memorial on the premises of the KHADC here.
Rev OL Snaitang, who spoke on the occasion, said that his father Lohory Sawkmie and Roy were good friends.
Snaitang said that in the run-up to Partition there were plans to include Assam – which then included what is now Meghalaya – with East Bengal, the present day Bangladesh, by the Muslim League.
However, Roy wrote to Delhi to foil this plan and Gopinath Bordoloi, Chief Minister of Assam, and the entire cabinet praised him, Snaitang added.
KHADC Chairman Strongpillar Kharjana said the state should remember and pay tribute to Roy because if it were not for him Meghalaya would have been included in the Panchayati Raj system rather than the separate Sixth Schedule.
