Shillong, Oct 23:The long-awaited demand of the people of Mawsynram for the upgradation of the Mawsynram Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block into a Civil Sub-Division is expected to be fulfilled by early 2026.
Mawsynram MLA Ollan Sing Suin along with members of the Synjuk ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Shnong met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to submit a memorandum urging the government to speed up the process.
“The Deputy Chief Minister has assured us that the government is positive about the proposal. Mawsynram is already on the list of areas identified for a Civil Sub-Division, and we are hopeful that the upgrade will take place next year,” Suin said.
Chairman of the Synjuk, Hiamdor Rapsang said that the people of Mawsynram have been demanding a Civil Sub-Division for the past 20 years. “Despite repeated appeals, nothing has happened so far. We will continue to follow up until this demand becomes a reality,” he said.
He added that creating a Civil Sub-Division is the most effective way to bring administration closer to the people. “Since the present MDA government calls itself a people’s government, we believe it will respond positively to our request. Mawsynram already meets the necessary requirements, with several government offices and infrastructure in place,” Rapsang stated.
Established in 1962, the Mawsynram C&RD Block is one of the oldest in Meghalaya. It covers 144 villages with a population of about 65,000 people. The area stretches across roughly 510 square kilometres, and some villages are located over 112 kilometres from the district headquarters in Shillong.
Due to poor connectivity and the long distance from the capital, residents often struggle to access government services. The Synjuk pointed out that better administrative reach will help improve development and governance in the region.
Mawsynram, known globally as one of the wettest places on earth, attracts tourists and researchers every year. However, locals continue to face challenges due to bad roads and limited access to administrative facilities.
The MLA also mentioned that new road projects funded by the World Bank will soon be initiated. “The tenders are expected to be floated in the next two months. The road condition is very poor, and even I find it difficult to travel comfortably within my constituency,” Suin added.
