Shillong, Oct 11: A special program was held at the Oncology Department, Civil Hospital, Shillong, to observe World Hospice & Palliative Care Day. The event centered on the theme “Achieving the Promise: Universal Access to Palliative Care” and brought together healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and dignitaries.
Dr. Neela E. Kharsahnoh, Director of Health Services (MCH & FW), emphasized the importance of a holistic and compassionate approach to healthcare in her keynote address. She stated that palliative care is not just about managing pain and symptoms but also about restoring dignity, hope, and comfort to patients and their families.
Dr. Kharsahnoh urged everyone to be mentally and emotionally strong and face diseases with courage and resilience. She highlighted that cancer patients, regardless of their financial background, can now access better care and treatment.
Guest of Honor Dr. Carol Iangrai, Joint Director of Health Services, Meghalaya, spoke about home-based palliative care, outlining a model where caregivers visit patients once a week to provide necessary care and comfort. She noted that the Central Government has allocated palliative care services to sub-centers, making them readily available in villages.
The event featured testimonials from patients and caregivers, a special song “Song of Hope & Healing” by the Oncology Department staff, and a therapeutic yoga session by the AYUSH Department. The program concluded with the distribution of gifts to palliative patients and a vote of thanks.
The successful observance of the day reinforces the vision of a compassionate healthcare system in Meghalaya, prioritizing every individual’s quality of life.
