Shillong, Oct 10: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) took on the advice of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to parents asking them to take care of their children with crimes surging.
“Not all parents have the luxury to keep tab of their children round the clock as they have to also fight for survival and many are struggling to even keep food on their table. So to tell the parents to take care of their children due to the law and order situation in the State is an attempt by the government to shift the responsibility from itself to ensure that crimes are reduced and then the Government gets the credit,” HYC said in a statement.
Tynsong had cautioned public to be more vigilant and said that the police department is there to ensure safety of the citizens.
His statement comes after a 7-year-old boy was found murdered yesterday, just a month after a 4-year-old child from the same locality was found dead.
“You cannot just blame the government because so many people, for any issue they blame the government. But I personally feel that we need to also have proper education for parents; they need to take care of the kids. How did the child disappear?” the Deputy CM told reporters when asked about recurring crimes against children.
He had said the police are trying their best to ensure the safety of citizens and added, “As far as criminal activities happen, I think you cannot say the lapses happen just because of police force. My appeal to all the concern is let us also take care of our children or let us also be little more preventive of ourselves because now a days you really don’t know what is going to happen…wherever you go or whatever you do, whether it is safe or not..” he had said.
The HYC however said the Deputy Chief Minister is putting the blame and the onus on the parents for the safety and security of the children in the State. “It is a very irresponsible, insensitive and shocking statement, unbecoming of his stature and position as the Minister in charge of the law and order of the State,” HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem said.
He said Tynsong should have sought the cooperation of all stakeholders in preventing recurrence of such crimes instead of blaming the citizens.
Synrem said it is the responsibility of the State government to ensure the safety and security of the citizens and their properties and if it is unable to do so it has no moral rights to continue governing.
“The people of the state are in a state of shock, fear and anguish over recent killings. What the citizens require is an assurance from the government that their wards are safe at home, at school and in the community and that culprits are nabbed and punished as per law to prevent recurrence of such heinous crimes,” the HYC president said.
