Shillong, Aug 19: The Meghalaya High Court has sought for a fresh report if there are any unauthorised religious structures constructed on government land.
A division bench of Chief Justice Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), initiated by the Registrar, following an administrative order by the court on August 14, 2025.
The court noted that since the State through an affidavit filed on April 25, 2016 and an additional affidavit on September 3, 2013 mentioned that there are religious structures which have been constructed on government land, the Additional Advocate General is expected to file the latest report.
The order is to enable the court to dispose of the petition, which was brought up to ascertain if the State complied to the Supreme Court order dated January 31, 2018 in matter that relates to an enquiry into religious structures on government land.
The State in its earlier affidavits had stated that there are three religious structures in West Garo Hills district and four in East Garo Hills district, which are being “regularised” and that there are no illegal encroachment of public roads, sideways, and others were found.
The next hearing of the PIL is scheduled on September 2, 2025.
