Shillong, Aug 14: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) on Thursday visited the dwelling units, reportedly abandoned by the Urban Affairs Department in Lumphira, Nongmensong.
The visit was made following complaints that the area has become unsafe for women and children.
According to the Youth Congress four dwelling units were left abandoned for nearly 15 or 16 years and have turned into dens for criminal activities, thieves and drug traffickers.
During the inspection the MPYC members found that two dwelling units revealed serious damage besides smashed up doors, windows, exits and electrical wires. They confirmed that these damages were caused by alcohol and drug users as used syringes, alcohol and beer bottles were found in these units.
Morbid arts were painted and obscene writings were on the walls of these dwelling units.
These dwelling units have been built to provide housing to the low income residents. About five units were constructed but abandoned.
Speaking to reporters MPYC Vice President Henry Kharmuti said the failure of the government to allot and accommodate these units to low income families have turned them into dens of illegal activities.
Kharmuti criticised local MLA AL Hek stating he has not taken any initiative to take up the matter with the State government. He said that illegal activities in the area have caused the Dorbar Shnong of Nongmensong to lose sleep.
