Shillong, Aug 7:In a major reform aimed at creating a level playing field and streamlining the Meghalaya Civil Services (MCS) examination process, the state cabinet has decided to discontinue the optional subject paper currently included in the competitive exams.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the decision today, stating that the move was based on recommendations from the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) and a dedicated MPSC Reform Committee.
“At present, candidates can choose from 23 optional subjects, ranging from mathematics and geography to history and others. However, these subjects often lead to an uneven playing field. The relative difficulty and marking standards differ from subject to subject, giving some candidates an undue advantage,” Sangma explained.
The Chief Minister also noted the logistical challenges faced by MPSC in conducting exams for so many optional subjects. “It is a huge administrative burden. Therefore, after careful consideration and recommendations, we have decided to remove the optional subject altogether.”
In its place, the government will introduce a new paper focused on Meghalaya. The subject will cover a wide range of topics including the state’s economy, culture, history, and other key areas relevant to public administration in the region.
“You’re going to be officers serving the people of Meghalaya, so it’s important you understand the state’s unique context. This new subject will ensure that,” Sangma said.
A committee of officials will be constituted to design the framework and syllabus for the Meghalaya subject paper.
The Chief Minister termed this as a “very important reform” that will not only speed up the MCS examination process but also ensure fairness and relevance in selecting future civil servants.
