Shillong, Jul 6: The Meghalaya government has claimed to have completed renovation work for 1,391 out of 1,607 state-run lower primary schools under Mission Education with work on the remaining 216 underway.
According to official data, the renovation drive covers 86 percent of the 1,607 lower primary schools identified for repair. The programme, with close to Rs 1,000 crore committed to school infrastructure, is being implemented across all 12 districts and includes lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools.
In all, more than 2,000 LP and UP school works have been taken up under Mission Education so far. This includes 191 new/upgraded LP and seven UP schools completed in Phase 1, 100 LP schools in Phase 2 and 117 LP schools under Phase 3. Phase 4, covering 186 new LP and secondary school buildings, is currently under tendering.
The completed works include restoration of roofs, walls, flooring, doors, windows and finishing. New and upgraded schools are also being equipped with additional classrooms, furniture, libraries and sanitation facilities.
As per phase-wise data, 1,744 LP and UP school works have been completed and 278 are in progress out of 2,208 taken up.
Officials said progress is being documented school by school with geo-tagged, time-stamped photographs. Periodically, photos of dilapidated schools will make it into the news but the government stated that “isolated” examples do not reflect the statewide position, with the majority of government LP schools already renovated or under active renovation.
