West Garo Hills police today arrested five persons involved in the brutal assault of a woman.
A video that went viral showed a group of men severely beating up a woman with bamboo sticks.
Police later confirmed that the incident occurred yesterday at Lower Teksragre in Dadenggre, West Garo Hills.
Based on the video, police from Damal Asim Police Station went to the village to investigate the case.
In the process, police initially arrested two persons involved in the assault. Later in the evening, three more persons who absconded were arrested. They will be produced in court tomorrow.
Meanwhile, chairperson of the Assembly committee on women empowerment Santa Mary Shylla today sought a report from West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma and also directed for legal action against all the culprits.
Shylla also said that a delegation of the committee will visit West Garo Hills on July 1 and also meet the victim.
Similarly, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident.
Today, the vice chairperson of the commission met the district police chief and sought stringent action against all those involved in the assault.
