Mawkyrwat, Nov 3: Police in South West Khasi Hills have arrested four individuals, including a juvenile, for extortion in the name of a faction of the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA-R).
An FIR was registered at Nonghyllam police station on October 28 that the victim received an extortion note claiming to be that of GNLA-R and also received threat calls from an unknown phone number.
Based on the FIR, the staff of Ranikor circle and special cell Mawkyrwat police began a hunt and arrested one suspect identified as Mann R Marak (25) of Upper Rajapara, South West Khasi Hills.
Based on his confession, four more suspects, including a minor were arrested, police said.
Those arrested are Marson R. Marak (18) and Babulin D Sangma (27), both of Upper Rajapara and Tartus N Marak (20) of Mulapat.
Police said further investigation is ongoing to ascertain their membership with GNLA-R and the role of any other members of the supposed GNLA cell in the crime.
