The three autonomous district councils (ADCs) of the state – KHADC, JHADC and GHADC – today unanimously came out in opposition to the central government’s intention to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country.
In this respect, a joint meeting was held at the KHADC headquarters here today attended by all three Chief Executive Members it was decided to send a joint petition to the Law Commission on their opposition to the UCC.
Speaking to reporters, KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that the three ADCs will tell the Law Commission that the councils will not countenance the introduction of the UCC in Meghalaya.
They believe that the UCC will dilute the rich culture, traditions, customs and practices of the indigenous people.
He also said that provisions under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution give the ADCs the right to safeguard the customary practices of the indigenous people.
Syiem said that the UCC will affect the inheritance system, marriage, land and forest customs and traditions and all three ADCs have therefore come together to oppose it.
