Two riders on a scooty died instantly when they crashed into a car and then a truck on the Shillong Bypass today afternoon.
The incident was reported to police by the headman of Umroi Madan at around 3:30pm.
The deceased, both from West Jaintia Hills, were identified as Khrawbor Pakma of Mynso village and pillion rider David Sajem of Ioksi village.
Pakma was driving the scooty (ML 05AB 5721) towards Umiam when he attempted an overtake. However, the scooty then collided with a Hyundai Eon car (ML 05K 2600) driven by one B Marbiangbor Thangkhiew from Upper Shillong. Thangkhiew was travelling with his family to Guwahati at the time.
The collision with the car then resulted in Pakma losing total control of the scooty, and the two-wheeler then collided with the rear tire of a truck (ML 11 8622), driven by Iohbor Lapasam from Shangpung.
The bodies of both scooty riders were crushed by the truck tyre and they died instantly. The bodies were later taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for legal formalities.
