Acting on a specific tip-off, personnel of the 193rd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya apprehended 13 Bangladeshi nationals on Saturday on suspicion of having entered India illegally.
Two of them are women and another two are small children.
The group are thought to have crossed the international border in East Khasi Hills. In a press release today, the BSF also said that it had nabbed three Indian nationals, all residents of West Garo Hills, from the spot who are believed to have been facilitating the illegal entry.
The illegal migrants were caught by the BSF personnel as they were emerging from an area of jungle close to the international border where they were to board a Tata Sumo that had been meant to meet them there.
On interrogation, the Bangladeshis informed that they had entered India with the intention of travelling on to Kashmir in order to work in manual labour or other menial jobs.
The 16 people who were detained were all handed over to police in Dangar for further legal action.
